Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS or TNS) is a method by which a weak current is used for electrical stimulation of nerves using electrodes located on the skin. The method, often called TENS, can be used for pain relief in physiotherapy and in established medical science.
Treatment with TENS may vary in different ways. For example, the electrodes can be placed either directly on the painful area, on acupuncture points, trigger points or other sore points.
In addition, TENS can be used at varying frequency and voltage. Whether high or low frequency is used at a high or low intensity will usually indicate whether the treatment is referred to as so-called conventional TENS or acupuncture-like TENS (AL-TENS).
